Irish Eyes is available from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid.
An excerpt:
Dear Lily,
Nothing could have prepared me for this
place. Honestly, to say it’s beautiful is a colossal
understatement. This land takes beauty to a whole
new level. Not only the sights and sounds, but the
people, too. But more about the people later.
When I got off the plane I expected...I don’t
know what I expected, exactly—but it wasn’t
what I found. Even the airport was breathtaking,
surrounded by miles of open land covered in a
rich, deep green grass that looks more like real
carpet than the stuff that Mom had in our family
room at home.
And you know how we always thought that
Vermont was hilly? Mountainous, even? Well, we
were clueless. This place is so endlessly rolling
that I fear even a ship’s first mate could find
himself seasick. I hope I get used to walking on the
lumps and bumps of this new place. If not, I’ll be
spraining my ankles every day. Let’s hope the
sidewalks are flat, at least. Hell, I hope they have
sidewalks—I haven’t seen any yet.
Riding from the airport to my temporary new
home was an adventure. Irish taxi drivers are like
taxi drivers the world over; they talk nonstop and
spend more time pointing out the “sights” than
they do paying attention to the road ahead of
them. And what a road it was! Narrow and
unlined except for the ruts that look like they
were made by elephants, the “highway” between
Dublin and here isn’t one I’ll look forward to
riding again. I kid you not—my hip is bruised
from being bashed against the inside of the
decrepit little taxi. No exaggeration, Lily. It’s the
truth.
But I did get to see some things that you just
don’t see at home.
The driver—Shamus was his name, by the
way—was careful to show me places to eat
(Mulligan’s Pub being at the top of his list) and the
chemist’s shop (they don’t call it a ‘drugstore’
over here) for finding my ‘female fixings.’ I can
hear you laughing, but I promise you—that’s
exactly what he said. Can you imagine? A modern
man— in his thirties, probably—says ‘female
fixings’? Never in New York, huh? And he did it
all after he asked me out to dinner—did I mention
that yet? Well, more on that little tidbit later, too.
When I inquired about the castle, the ruddyfaced,
red-haired Romeo clammed right up. I
pushed him a bit, claiming that I wanted to learn
about all the old castles in County Meath, and
asked him to tell me what he knew about the
place. I wasn’t above turning on the flutteringeyelash,
hair-tossing routine, either. Sadly, neither
my pointed questions nor womanly wiles had a
positive effect on the now silent-as-the-tomb
driver.
Muttering something beneath his breath, he
made a point of showing me St. Brigid’s Church,
an imposing white brick building right in the
center of town. Under other circumstances, I
would have loved to learn more about the
building, since it’s undoubtedly an important
historical monument. There’s even a hilly little
graveyard with moss-covered slabs of granite
behind the church. Shamus made it clear, though,
that not only was he not interested in talking about
the Castle, he wasn’t at all as interested in me as
he’d first been. So I thought it prudent to keep my
mouth shut about the church—no comments on
that one.
When we reached the rental cottage, a
thatched fairy-tale fantasy like the ones we drew
with our crayons as children, Shamus unloaded my
baggage from the boot (it’s not a trunk here, no
matter how much it looks like the one on my
Audi). I swear I could hear him say something
about banshees and ghouls as he drove away.
Oh, and no second inquiry about going out to
dinner with him before he left, either. Which was
really too bad, since he was temptingly handsome
and, as we both know, I’m currently single.
Again.
Ugh, let’s not go there.
Did you think Ireland was going to be like
this? I admit that I didn’t. And I haven’t even
scratched the surface of my explorations—I
wonder what I’ll find when I get down to looking
around. I’ll keep you posted as things here move
forward.
For now, I’m off in search of a hot meal. I
didn’t see anything that even comes close to
resembling a Wendy’s or a Pizza Hut. I hope the
food here is easier to understand than the people
are!
I’m glad I came here, Lily. It’s going to be
good to get some distance from the mess back at
home. Maybe I can begin to figure out what I’m
going to do next. After all that’s happened, I’d like
to crawl into a hole and bury myself, but I know I
can’t do that. I know, I know...I can hear you
pressing the buttons, dialing Dr. Monroe as you
read this. But don’t. You don’t need to worry
about me. I’m going to be fine. I promise.
Now, I’m really going to find some food. I’ll
write again soon.
Love, Maddy
P.S. As soon as I get the Internet thingy
hooked up to my laptop I’ll send e-mails, too.
Don’t worry, though. The snail mail will keep
coming—I know how you love to examine the
strange stamps, tear open the envelopes and hold
the pages in your hands. I do, too. It must be one
of those silly family things, don’t you think?
Maybe all those letters we got at camp from
Granny when we were kids—you know the ones.
Anyhow, the e-mails will soon be on the way, too.
Just thought I’d let you know.

IRISH EYES Excerpt

TIMING Excerpt
Available from Liquid Silver Books.
It would have been simple to fake orgasm. After all, she’d done it so many times in
the past, with such convincing results, that doing it yet again, moaning and panting,
squealing and shivering on cue as if she was the reincarnation of Pavlov’s dog, would
have been almost second nature to her. But in that instant, in that tiny flickering point in
time, she knew she couldn’t do it. Not again. Maybe not ever.
I deserve satisfaction, too—don’t I? And not with my own hand or the thankfullynearly-
silent flick-a-switch-always-ready vibrator I’ve got hidden in the bathroom,
either. No, I deserve to feel a full-fledged, no-faking-it climax—with a man!
“Are you ready?” Tom groaned, his body tensed for release as he held himself above
her. Supported by his elbows, his football-player’s body was still hard and muscular.
After college he’d kept up the weekly practices and weekend games, as well as daily
workouts at the gym. His love of sports had kept him in excellent physical shape. It was
too bad his lovemaking skills weren’t as well-developed as his biceps or his tackling
prowess. “Really, Lisa, I’m almost there. Are you ready, honey?”
Do I look ready to you? I’m lying here thinking about tomorrow morning’s meeting.
Shit, I’m anything but ready. But maybe I’m not doing my part, either. Maybe I should
concentrate a bit more, really try and get myself “ready.”
Shifting beneath him so that her clitoris came in contact with the base of his hard-on
with every thrust, she matched the rhythm of his hips perfectly. Almost all of the
lubrication she’d produced earlier, when they were kissing and touching, had dried up
and the slapping of flesh on flesh was uncomfortable.
“Oh, yeah. That’s it, baby. That’s it,” Tom’s eyes closed and his head tilted back as
he matched her movements.
“No, it’s not it,” she said. Pushing against his chest, she waited until his eyes opened
and he looked down at her. His eyes were wide, his hips had stopped moving and his
expression was one of pure shock. “It’s not doing it for me tonight. I’m sorry, but I’m just
not into this.”
“You’re not … are you kidding me?”
“Why would I kid you?”
“But I’m ready to explode. Can’t you feel how excited I am?”
Nodding, she said, “I can feel how excited you are. Can’t you feel how excited I’m
not?” She hated to hurt his feelings but sometimes the kindest cuts were the deepest.
It’s been a year. Let’s see what this relationship is made of once and for all. Will we
get past this? Figure out a way to make both of us happy in bed? Or will this be the end
of what has been, otherwise, a pretty good thing?
Tom looked like a man who’d just learned all his favorite things were illusions. His
erection stayed firm, and deeply situated inside her pussy, but his face fell. For a moment
it seemed he might simply get up and leave.
A part of her wished he would do just that. The other, bigger part of her prayed he
wouldn’t.

Friday Funny
This cracked me up!
Fifteen Things to Tell Your Daughters:
1. Don't imagine you can change a man - unless he's in diapers.
2. What do you do if your boyfriend walks out? You shut the door behind him.
3. If they can put a man on the moon -- they should put them all up there.
4. Never let your man's mind wander - it's too little to be out alone.
5. Go for younger men. You might as well - they never mature anyway.
6. Men are all the same - they just have different faces so we can tell them apart.
7. Definition of a bachelor-- A man who has missed the opportunity to make some woman miserable.
8. Women don't make fools of men - most of them are the do-it-yourself types.
9. Best way to get a man to do something is to suggest he's too old for it.
10. Love is blind, but marriage is a real eye-opener.
11. If you want a committed man, look in a mental hospital.
12. The children of Israel wandered around the desert for 40 years. Even in biblical times, men wouldn't ask for directions.
13. If he asks what sort of books you're interested in, tell him cheque books.
14. Remember, a sense of humor does not mean that you tell him jokes. It means that you laugh at his.
15. Sadly, all men are created equal.

Me, I'm writing sex. Yeah, you heard right. I've reached a sexy scene in my latest wip and today is the day the um, story, moves forward. Or grows, if you will. Or becomes larger than life, LOL. Ahem! Right, I'll get ahold of myself. HA!
Well, whatever you're doing today, I hope you have fun.

Coming October 1st!!

I love this cover! I love this story too because it was a blast to write. Imagine taking a fairytale and "tweaking" it a bit...a new spin on something old...making it grow until it's just the way you'd always dreamed it could be...
Hmm...sounds interesting, doesn't it?
Finding a huge beanstalk in her backyard is the beginning of an adventure that Jackie will never forget. She just may find her "And they lived happily ever after" moment just when she least expects to! And in the oddest place!

One more tidbit, an annoying one!
I've taken down most of my book covers from the right side of this blog because they are not uploading or presenting themselves correctly. I've posted the cover for Hot Summer Nights so you all can see my problem. (Sorry April!!!) What's the deal with these things? They look short and wide and not at all attractive. I've tried uploading them a gazillion times and every time it's the same thing.
Help! Anyone have any ideas?!

Irish Eyes on bestseller list!
This morning I saw Irish Eyes on the Whiskey Creek bestseller list at Fictionwise. Woo Hoo, I am thrilled!
To spread the happiness, I'm posting a teeny tiny excerpt from Irish Eyes. This book is available in print or download from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid. I hope you'll check it out!
The purchase link.
From Irish Eyes:
“Good to see you tonight, Brian,” said Mrs. Quinn. She smelled faintly of mothballs and that had a momentary quelling effect on his libido. Just momentary, though. Before she opened her mouth to continue talking, the mothballs had lost their effectiveness.
“Nice evening, isn’t it? A good evening for a dance, eh? You young folks should be using up some shoe leather, I’m thinking. Why not ask the wee lassie to take a spin?” prodded Mrs. Quinn. She bestowed a gap-toothed grin on him and he glanced at the other half of the crone’s matchmaking target.
One glance was all it took.
Brian’s jeans were growing so snug that he was nearly ready to bolt from the room.
Concentrate on her words, man—not her eyes—or that gorgeous face, with its dark skin. Pay no attention to the firmness of her breasts. Keep your eyes away from her—good God, is that a nipple? Hell, how’s a man to behave himself with a nice nubbin like that pointed at him?
“Would you like to dance, then?” Brian asked, staring pointedly into Maddy’s eyes. It was not the most romantic request, he knew. But under the circumstances, it was the best he could manage.
“Dance?”
She found that she was having difficulty speaking. The music and crowd seemed to be miles from her and she felt like she was in a vacuum. A vacuum that was only big enough to accommodate two people.
“Yes, a dance,” he asked again. He forced his eyes to stay on hers as he felt his penis give another strong pulse.
“Oh, I think I’d like that,” Maddy answered, hoping that she sounded sufficiently aloof. After all, she reasoned, that’s precisely what he deserved.
She had been dreaming about this moment for days. Ever since he had almost loved her and left her, she had been hoping for her chance at revenge.
As she put her glass of punch on the table and took Brian’s hand, she felt her stomach quiver. She knew that it was more than a desire to pay him back for teasing her that was making her crotch slippery. Much more.
Brian managed to make his way out to the center of the dance floor without embarrassing himself. He saw Shamus glare at them but pretended that he hadn’t caught the killer look. No, he had enough to deal with without concerning himself with the jealous taxi driver.
He wondered how he was going to manage to act casual when his cock was taking on a life of its own.

Romance Studio reviews Miami Honey!
From The Romance Studio:
"Janet is a high-class and highly-paid call girl in Miami Beach, who loves her job and generally enjoys her life. One night she meets William, an eye surgeon, who turns her viewpoint around. Her reactions to lovemaking with William, even as a client, are much more intense than usual, although as a very sensual woman, she never has to fake her reactions. Afterwards, he asks her about herself, and she finds herself amazed to tell him the truth about her life, her sociology degree, and her boyfriend.
Life moves on and Janet has other appointments and spends time with boyfriend Matt; but suddenly she finds herself wondering, is it enough to have a man who loves her? Shouldn’t she be with a man for whom she feels love, too? While she’s considering this, William is urging her boss to make another appointment for him with Janet, who’s apparently made a very deep impression on him as well. William has high social status and wealth, and an intense magnetism.
Miami Honey is a surprisingly enticing novella which copes with real-life issues of trust and life satisfaction in the context of a sultry, graphic tale. Janet is an exceedingly well-written heroine. William, her client Matt, her boyfriend, and Bruno, her manager, are also three-dimensional and realistic individuals. All in all, I highly recommend this story. I feel that I learned from it, even though unexpectedly, and that to me is one hallmark of an excellent tale."
Overall rating: 4 1/2 Hearts
Sensuality rating: Explicit

Fallen Angels review, Miami Honey
4 Angels from FAR for Miami Honey!
"Enjoying her work as a Call Girl in high demand, Janet Buck is happy and content with the results of her physical labors. From the odd to the basic ménage, Janet is there, willing and pumped about each new client she takes on as well as her regulars. What more could a girl ask for when she has an understanding boyfriend and a great boss? Things change after her tried and true rules start to wobble with a client who causes her to rethink her life and relationships.
This is not a story for anyone looking for a traditional journey to the world of living happily ever after. Janet Buck is a skilled modern day courtesan doling out pleasure as her customers see fit. The encounters she winds up in had me either wide mouthed or pealing over with laughter. William, Janet’s client who brings with him acceptance and the trust she’s lacked in her personal dealings, is a good and kind man. He just happens to be brilliant and kinky! The kind of man every woman needs, working woman or not in her life and bed." -Rachelle, Fallen Angel Reviewer

I love Tully!
I'm so excited! Celtic Love Knots, Volume 4 is out at Whiskey Creek Press Torrid! I love Celtic lore so writing Taming Tully and Maidensong were truly labors of love. I hope you'll go check it out!
Here's a taste of what you'll find inside the pages of CLK4:
Taming Tully is a story filled with pookas, cluricauns and fairies—but it’s also filled with love. When Maureen meets Sean she promptly forgets all the strange things that have been happening to her since her arrival in Ireland.
An excerpt from Taming Tully:
“What are you looking for, Maureen? What is it that’s got you in such a state this fine morning?”
“My colored pencils…they’ve gone missing.” Maureen dropped to her knees and looked beneath the chintz sofa, assorted armchairs and knick-knack covered tables in the room. She didn’t see the expensive pencils anywhere.
Damn. Yesterday it was my red bra, today it’s my pencils. What the hell is going on in this place, anyway? How can anyone live where things disappear on a daily basis?
Maureen stood up and looked down to where her aunt sat, nestled on the sofa like a kite tethered to a tree. She seemed small and frail, as if a gentle breeze could lift her up and away. But despite the nearly translucent cast to her wrinkled face, Aunt Tess looked better than she had yesterday. And that was the point, wasn’t it?
The elderly woman had just gotten past a vicious bout with pneumonia. Since there was no one else in the family who could tend her during her recovery…well, Maureen found herself in Tully before she knew that the family whirlwinds had even convened.
She reached down and tucked a brightly patterned green quilt around her aunt’s shoulders.
“Have everything you need, Aunt Tess?”
When the woman nodded her cap of white curls and smiled up at her, warmth flooded Maureen’s heart. She knew that coming to Ireland had been the right decision. After all, putting her life on hold for a month or so wasn’t the most terrible thing in the world. It wasn’t as if her life had been going that well, anyway.
“I do, dear heart. Going for a walk in the glen, are you? That’s good, then. Don’t forget to take your jacket. It’s a stiff wind I’m feeling in my bones.”
Aunt Tess sipped from the ever-present delicate Beleek teacup before setting it on the table beside her.
“You sure you don’t need anything?” Maureen’s gaze passed over the table holding the tea things. She did a quick mental inventory to see that all of her aunt’s needs were spoken for.
“No, don’t worry a bit about me. I’ve got my e-reader, you know.” The elderly woman held up the small silver device and grinned. “Today I’ve a Maeve Binchy. What else could I need? Tea and Maeve on an afternoon…I’ve got it all.”
“I won’t be too long, then. Love you.” Maureen planted a fast kiss on the white curls.
“Don’t forget the jacket,” called Aunt Tess. “And mind the pookas, you hear?”

Scorching Summer!

Have you read this yet? I promise, this is one hot volume of stories. It's getting great reviews and since I've read it I can personally vouch for the readability of all the other stories. Oh, yeah, there's one story in this called Vows that I'm pretty attached to! ;)
4 Hearts from Love Romances:
Valerie said...
"...This is a very entertaining anthology with some really good stories that are different and fun. Fans of the paranormal should enjoy this one. Just the right thing to take to the beach, as it is also available as a paperback. This reviewer did find some of the stories a bit weaker than others, but overall, this selection held this reviewer’s interest and it was a fun, exciting read. Each author gives the reader some really interesting characters, intriguing plots and plenty of hot sex. There are vampires, wizards, witches, elves, demons and ghosts. The reader, if reading by the beach, will certainly need to go take a dip every now and then.
This reviewer particularly liked Conjuring Cade, Vows and A Taste of the Forbidden. These three stories are very well written, exciting and Conjuring Cade had this reviewer laughing out loud. Anthologies are a wonderful way of getting to know new authors and how they write. This reviewer has added some of these authors to her *watch out for* list and will be eagerly awaiting new releases as well as looking at their back list. Summer Solstice Scorchers is an anthology well worth the investment and this reviewer hopes that the reader will enjoy it as much as she did."

September 1st releases at WCPT!!
Hi everyone! Happy September 1st! Hope you're all having a great holiday weekend. I'm supposed to be grilling hot dogs right now but I thought I'd just pop in really, really fast and say hello.
I've just been over to the WCPT site and taken a good long look at the new releases for September. Woo Hoo!! Now that's a lovely lineup of covers! And the stories sound hot, with lots of choices so that everyone seems destined to find something to their liking.
I've got to say I'm loving the Celtic Love Knots covers, not just because mine is this month's selection, either. I mean, that cover is just so perfectly attuned to the sort of stories it holds each month. This month Taming Tully and Maidensong will hopefully entertain readers, and do justice to the beautiful cover. Fingers crossed!
September's selections are all exciting and all look perfectly fabulous. I think I may just have to begin reading them today, and work my way through the list, LOL. I mean really, who can resist? Especially with titles like
Tarot Card Anthology: Book 1,
The Peacekeeper Journals II: The Gates of Life,
The Bride Wore Boots,
Cindy Revisited,
Loving Gabriel,
A Slave's Way Out,
Bird in a Gilded Cage: The Myth of Mirabella,
Men of Alaska: Heart of the Storm,
Torrid Teasers Volume 34:Can't Walk Away/Captive Audience,
Torrid Teasers Volume 35: Treasure/Black Angel, and
Celtic Love Knots 4: Taming Tully and Maidensong.
Whew! So much to read, so little time! Oh, that's right--I've got a whole month's worth of interesting reading right at my fingertips, don't I?
Best get cracking. First, back to my grill...

See you in September!
September 1st my Celtic Love Knots, Volume 4 is being released from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid. I am so excited about this release. Taming Tully and Maidensong were fun to write, especially since they deal with a topic I'm very much interested in--Celtic lore. I hope you'll check the CLK4 out. It's getting rave reviews! :)
And now, a short excerpt from Maidensong. Enjoy!
“Interested in Pictish symbols, are you?”
The voice startled her. It came from directly behind her and she whirled around so quickly that she became off-balance. Her body tipped and she banged her shoulder into the ten-foot-high pink granite stone she had been examining.
“Shit!” Dianne cried as she grabbed her shoulder. Stars danced behind her eyelids as the pain raced through her body. When it subsided she opened her eyes.
The owner of the voice was tall and handsome in a rugged sort of way. His hair fell in full ebony curls across his brow and his eyes were a deeper, richer green than the lush grass that they were standing on. He was tall, with broad shoulders and a muscular body and wore the outfit of every hiker in the Scottish highlands: jeans, a woolen sweater and hiking boots. His sweater was a deep loden green that matched his eyes.
“Didn’t mean to scare you. Are you all right?” He leaned closer to where she stood, rubbing her shoulder, and looked into her eyes with such intensity that she wondered what he was doing.
“Do I look all right?” she asked, scowling. “And what are you looking for, anyway?”
He pulled away from her and smiled. When he smiled it was as if the sun dimmed, she was so overwhelmed with the way his features moved on his face.
Handsome when you’re serious, Lord-have-mercy gorgeous when you’re smiling.
“I was looking to see whether or not you had a concussion,” he answered. “Apparently you do not.”
“I smacked my shoulder, not my head. And what were you doing, sneaking up on me like that? Did you try to scare me half to death?”
He tilted his head and a lock of black silk fell across his eye. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you at all. And I wasn’t sneaking up on you, either. I didn’t try to conceal myself in any way.”
“So what, then? What were you doing if you weren’t trying to scare the pants off me?” She stopped rubbing her shoulder and stood with her hands on her hips, waiting for an answer.
“I was merely trying to meet you, that’s all. It’s not every day I find a beautiful woman at the Maiden Stone,” he said. He surveyed her the way she had examined him. When his eyes met hers again he grinned. “And I did not say I wasn’t open to getting your pants off of you, mind.”
He waggled his eyebrows rakishly and, coupled with his thick Scottish accent, the effect was hilarious. She threw her head back and laughed out loud, a sound that reverberated through the trees at the edge of the clearing.
“Fair enough. Hard way to meet someone,” she said.
“Ach, I did not say anything about hardness, either,” he answered with a grin. “Let me introduce myself. I’m Cabe Pitts, and you’re…” He let his words trail off as he lifted an eyebrow and tilted his head, his intention obvious.
What have I got to lose? A handsome man appears out of nowhere in a romantic spot and wants to know my name – how did I get so lucky? So what if he’s broken my shoulder first.
“Dianne Tomes.” She put her hand out to him and when he surrounded it with his big one she felt a distinct jolt. Her nerves tingled and her nipples puckered beneath the thick sweater she wore. And she felt other slippery sensations, too. She rubbed her thighs together as she let his hand go. “Nice to meet you.”
“The pleasure, fair Dianne, is all mine. So, what are you doing here, in this magical spot? What brings you here?” Cabe leaned against the mammoth stone and crossed his arms. She saw his muscles tense beneath his jeans as he crossed his legs at the ankles.
This guy is hot. Who knew Scottish men could be so rugged? But where’s his kilt? I’d pay to see his legs!
“The Maiden Stone, of course.” Dianne ran a hand across the cool granite, touched her fingers to the carved symbols. “I read about it and decided to look for it when I visited Scotland. I’m staying at the Inverurie Inn for a few days, so here I am.”
She realized she was babbling but felt powerless to stop it. He grinned at her as if he knew it, too. She wondered if he had this effect on every woman he met.
I’ll bet you drive all the women wild, Cabe. And I’ll bet you know that you’re doing it, too.
“You’ll know, then, the legend of the stone,” Cabe said. He looked at the Celtic cross above his head with a serious expression on his face. “You’ll know that this stone is the result of a wish that was granted. It’s said that any wish uttered here will come true—eventually.”
“I’ve heard that,” answered Dianne. “This is the spot where a beautiful maiden met a handsome young man, isn’t it?”
“Aye.”
“And that handsome man pushed her into making a bargain with him,” she said.
“Well, I canna say for sure that he pushed her. It’s quite likely that she stumbled or fell but yes, a bargain between the two was struck,” said Cabe, nodding his head.

Jackie's Beanstalk cover!

OOH, I just love this cover! Really, truly love it! So much fun, so sexy and pretty, too!
Just to celebrate the new cover, I'm going to post a small, early excerpt from Jackie's Beanstalk. Enjoy!!
His tongue slid wetly along the gentle slope of her neck as his mouth moved lower to nip her collarbone. Her skin warmed as his tender mouth touched her body with tiny kisses that were more whispers than touch.
As his lips circled her hard nipple, pulling it into his heat and stroking it with his tongue, she arched her body, pressing herself to his touch. She felt the delicious sensations, the tingling that began somewhere deep within her and would spread—she knew—to enfold her fully. She longed for the feel of his touch lower...much lower.
A moan escaped from her body. It was a long, long sound filled with remembrances of passion shared and the promise of delights yet to come.
When his mouth danced along the flat planes of her abdomen, traveling toward what could only be—
* * * *
“Shit!”
She felt the tremors fill her body as the riding mower bounced off the trunk of a spreading maple. Her jaw snapped shut, trapping her lower lip between her teeth and she tasted blood.
It took only a second to back the John Deere from its position against the tree, about the same amount of time that it had taken to collide with the maple. She climbed off the machine and strode to the front of the little tractor. There were scrapes in the green paint and a good-sized dent in the front by the right tire.
“Shit!” She swore out loud as she left the tree behind and headed for the rest of the large yard. Swearing out loud on a hot July day didn’t seem particularly unusual. After all, there wasn’t anyone to hear her, anyone to mind whether or not she swore or sang church hymns.
Jackie Wallace lived alone in the large farmhouse that had been her parents’ home. When they moved to Sarasota they left Jackie the keys to the house, the keys to their old Caddy and the key to the cupboard where they stored the economy-size bags of dog food for their old dog, Lady. Jackie’s parents had been gone for a year and Jackie and Lady were falling into a lifestyle that, if not exactly adventurous, was at least comfortable.
She’d been especially thankful for the house—and Lady—to come home to when her boyfriend of two years tossed her out of his townhouse. He said he needed to “find himself” when in actuality what he planned to find was the recently divorced woman who had purchased the townhouse adjacent to his.
Jackie knew she had to stop thinking about Troy. It was driving her crazy, thinking about him and the things they once did together. Besides, if she hit that damn tree too many more times she was going to kill it. And what would she tell her father when she spoke with him on the phone? “Oh, by the way, I killed the tree you planted when I was born. How? Oh, I keep smashing into it when I mow the lawn. Why am I crashing into the tree? Oh, I just keep thinking about Troy and his incredible lovemaking talents, that’s all.”
Yeah, I’d better keep my mind off of Troy—his tongue, his cock, his talents—all of it, thought Jackie. It was too dangerous to think about him when she was—
“Shit!”
Jackie looked over the dented front fender of the tractor. If she stood up in the seat and stretched her neck out far and to the left, she could just make out the edge of what remained of her mailbox. But just barely.
* * * *
“I don’t think so, Kerry,” said Jackie. She reached down to scratch Lady’s silky fur. The dog was lying on her foot but she didn’t have the heart to move her. “I think I’m just going to stay in tonight, channel surf and see if I can’t find a good old movie to watch. Something romantic. Something sappy and a perfect match for a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Cookie Dough. Thanks anyway.”
She listened to the conversation from the tiny cell phone and scowled. Her best friend could be infuriating at times, but especially so just after a break up. Kerry was in a secure relationship with a guy who would move heaven and hell to make her happy. What did she know about being single?
“No, you’re wrong. No, I am not hiding at home. There are just no single guys that interest me, that’s all. You’ve been parading losers past me for a month. I can’t take it anymore. No, I don’t want to go to The Dugout. What does this guy look like anyway? The last ‘friend’ of George’s was practically a midget. No, don’t even go there. The guy stared at my nipples all night like a baby at a nursing mothers convention. Remember?”
Jackie grimaced as she heard Kerry’s justification of the last man she and George had foisted upon her. They were spoken so loudly Lady’s ears perked up.
“Um…yeah. All right. But after this one, we’re paid in full for that whole thing, all right? You can’t expect me to pay forever for something that happened when we were seven. Fine. What time will you be here? Fine.”
Jackie slapped the phone closed with a sigh. Then she gazed at the dog.
“Sorry, Lady. You’re on your own tonight, but I’ll leave you the Cookie Dough. Just don’t touch the Mint Chocolate Chip—that one’s mine!”

Hot Summer Nights excerpt...
In September the anthology Hot Summer Nights will be released from Liquid Silver Books. I'm thrilled to be part of this volume with talented authors Bonnie Dee and Jayelle Drewry. It is a hot, sexy trio of stories that is sure to heat up any night--or day!
My story is titled Sun Kissed. Here's an excerpt:
“Bess?”
Her eyes flew open, and she sat up straight. Exposing her breasts to his view didn’t startle her as completely as the idea she may have let him glimpse her dream.
Nonsense. She had been asleep. He couldn’t know what was going through her mind. Could he?
Bess shook her head to clear it. Forcing herself to concentrate on Clay’s words wasn’t easy. Although she was conscious, her body was still highly aroused.
“I’m sorry to disturb you. I ... I knocked, but there was no answer,” Clay said. His eyes dropped, and his gaze lingered on her breasts. When he spoke again, there was a smile on his face. “I didn’t mean to bother you while you were bathing, but I hoped to speak with you. If you’d prefer I return later...”
“No, you can stay. But I don’t think I can talk with someone who’s fully dressed while I’m naked. If you’d give me a moment...”
“I could disrobe.”
The words hung in the air—but only for an instant. Perhaps the erotic dream had lowered her inhibitions, because despite her earlier doubts about being intimate with Clay, Bess nodded. Her pussy tingled in anticipation. Clay pulled his shirt over his head, unzipped and pushed his shorts and swimsuit down, and stepped out of them so quickly it made her smile.
“May I?”

Celtic Love Knots, Volume 4
September 1st is the release day for Celtic Love Knots, Volume 4 from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid! I am beyond thrilled about this release. I had such a blast writing the stories for it because they involved a bit of research into an area that I'm very much interested in--Celtic lore. Maidensong and Taming Tully are getting rave reviews!

"I loved Celtic Love Knots, Volume 4 by Rusty Wicks. This is a small volume that is big on entertainment and I had too much fun reading it!...Maidensong is clever, and fun, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Dianne’s internal dialogue is wonderful and the reader gets a true glimpse into the mind of this character. The plot is fast paced and well written. ...Taming Tully is sharp and witty, with a twist at the end that made me laugh out loud. It was a mystery of sorts, with romance and humor thrown in as well. The writing is clear and concise, and vivid enough that I felt I could see the whole picture before me as the story unfolded. The premise of this story is enchanting.Kudos to Ms. Wicks for a perfectly wonderful read!" - 5 Angels

Baking? Nuh uh!
Baking lessons? Today, when it's a gazillion degrees in the shade, even in cooler-than-most-other-spots Maine? Nuh uh, not me! Sorry! If you're here looking for a scrumptious recipe then I'm going to disappoint you. Again, sorry! But really, I just couldn't face the hot bakery ovens today. I just couldn't!!
Instead, I hit the beach. Now, that's more my style for a sweltering Friday afternoon. Lying in my beach chair, a copy of a new romance open in my hand and a tall glass of--well, you'll just have to fill that in yourself. Hey, some info is private! ;)
Hope you're having a wonderful Friday!

Monday Fun
Ah, I love a man in a kilt...
In Scotland, the most important time for a young lad is when he "comes of age" and is allowed to purchase and wear his first kilt.
A young lad went to a tailor shop and found the material he wanted for his first kilt. He took the material to the tailor and said, "I'd like ye to make me a kilt with this material here and, if ye don't mind, I'd like ye to make me a pair of matching underwear for it. I hear it gets a might drafty up dem tings!"
So the tailor took the material and promised to call the young lad when the order was completed.
A few days later, the tailor called the lad back to the shop. "Here's ye kilt, and here's ye matching underwear, and here's five yards of the material left over. Ye might want to take it home and keep it in case you want anything else made of it."
The lad rushed home with his order, threw the material in his room and donned his kilt. So pleased, he decided to run to his girlfriend's house to show off his new purchases. In his excitement, he forgot to don his underwear.
When his girlfriend answered the door, he pointed to his kilt. "Well, what do ye think?"
"Ah, but dat's a fine looking kilt," she exclaimed.
"Aye, and if ye like it, ye'll really like what's underneath," he boasted, lifting the edge of his kilt.e
"Oh, but dat's a dandy!"
Still not realizing he didn't have his underwear on he nodded. "Aye, and if ye like it, I've got five more yards of it at home!"

An 86 from Mrs. Giggles
I'm still smiling over the fact that Mrs. Giggles gave my latest release, Timing, a score of 86!
"...Timing is more women's fiction than romance if we want to classify it as something because this story deals with Lisa trying to determine what the "right" thing to do is rather than a romance story of sweetness and sunshine. Tom is from all appearances a perfect catch - she likes him, he's gorgeous, he has a stable career, and he adores her. Is it "terribly selfish and immature", as Lisa puts it, to resent him for his inability to give her an orgasm and his turning sex into something she's come to dread? And oh god, he wants to do it all the time... " --Mrs. Giggles

Thursday Baking
Yesterday's baking lesson wasn't so much a lesson as it was...well, it was work, plain and simple. My baking teacher is catering a children's birthday bash this afternoon so I helped prepare some of the food. It wasn't just toil, don't get me wrong. But the kid-friendly cookies aren't going to impress anyone at a fancy dinner or swanky lawn party I may hold. Sometime. In the future. In another lifetime.
Hey, here's the recipe. You decide. Swanky? or comforting? I know what my vote is! :)
Chocolate Pillows
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1-1/2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1-1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts, if desired
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine brown sugar, butter and chocolate in a heavy saucepan over medium heat, stirring until chocolate melts. When mixture is smooth, add milk and mix. Then remove from heat and add remaining ingredients.
Drop cookie batter by teaspoons onto greased cookie sheets. Place sheets into pre-heated 350-degree oven and bake for 12-18 minutes or until cookies are just set. If desired, frost with ordinary buttercream frosting.

Yesterday's baking lesson
Love it that my baking teacher has found her health again. I can't tell you how much I missed my lessons!
Yesterday the topic of study was...drum roll please... Cinnamon Babka.
Cinnamon Babka
Dough:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup plus 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
4 egg yolks
1 package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
Topping:
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 pound butter
1 large egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
Cream the butter and 1/2 cup sugar in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks until frothy.
Mix the yeast in warm water with the 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Add yeast mixture to egg yolks. Then add milk, vanilla and salt.
Add the yeast mixture to the creamed butter mixture. Slowly add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Turn dough out onto a floured work surface and knead until dough is smooth.
Cover the dough and allow it to rise in a warm place until it doubles.
Butter a 3-quart pan and shape the dough into it. Allow the dough to rise again for about 2 hours.
Combine topping ingredients, then coat the top of the dough with the topping.
Bake in a preheated 350*F oven for 35 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack.

The Mead Steed releases!
So excited! The Mead Steed was released yesterday! It is available here. I hope you'll check it out!!
When Rose arrives in Mead she’s hoping to find a new life. It’s a small place, where meteor showers and moose sightings are the big news in town. That’s where she meets Tom, the handsome owner of the local market. There is an instant attraction but there is one hurdle that must be jumped before the pair can find happiness. Tom has a secret . . . a very big secret. And it’s hidden inside his jeans.
An excerpt:
Rose dropped her jeans on the white t-shirt, slid her lacy blue panties down to her ankles, then kicked them on to the top of the pile of sweaty, greasy-smelling laundry. After sticking her hand under the shower spray, she stepped into the tub. Heaving a sigh of relief as the warm water washed over her, she reached for the loofah and squirted a generous dollop of body wash onto the sponge.
“Damn, that place reeks. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat another french fry for the rest of my life—not even if I live to be a hundred,” she muttered as she began to scrub her body clean of the foul stink of hamburgers, fried food and stale coffee.
After working the lunch crowd at the diner, the only thing she yearned for was a long, hot shower. Which was good—since it was the only thing waiting for her when she retuned to the house she shared with her husband.
As usual, Jake wasn’t anywhere to be found. He had probably stopped off to have a beer—or two or ten—with the guys. But that…well, that wasn’t unusual. Jake had a habit of visiting the town’s watering hole after his shift was finished. He and the rest of the road crew practically had monogrammed bar stools, they were in the tavern so often.
As she washed her long, curly brown hair, she felt the strands begin to lose their coating of cheap vegetable oil. The oil clung to everything in the diner’s kitchen, and as she rinsed the first round of shampoo out she wondered, not for the first time, if there wasn’t somewhere she could work that didn’t involve such a rancid odor. It wasn’t until her hair and body had been scrubbed twice that she felt human again.
“I hate that place.” Rose’s voice echoed off the wet tile walls, a silky sound that made the empty apartment feel less lonely. She snorted. “The Diner. God, could it be any more ridiculous than that? How could anyone be so unimaginative? Naming a diner The Diner—jeez, it’s like calling a church The Church or saying The Store, The Gas Station…”
Beneath the warm droplets Rose’s hands traced a familiar pattern on her lean body. The routine never varied and she didn’t even realize what she was doing until her nipples hardened beneath her fingertips. A glance downward confirmed her feelings. Her body had reacted instantly to her touch. It demanded a kind touch, even if it was her own. As long as someone was prepared to attend to its needs, it was ready to comply.
With the tips of her thumbs Rose massaged scented soap bubbles across her taut nipples. Enjoying the tingling heaviness, she palmed her breasts, holding them as if she was weighing fruit at the market.
A smile played around the edges of her mouth. She knew she’d never be doing this at the Shop ’N Save.
Sliding her left hand down her flat stomach toward the spot between her long legs that begged to be touched, she thought longingly of the handsomest man she knew. Closing her eyes, she thought of his hard body and envisioned how he would feel pressed up against her, fitting himself into her, riding her until she exploded with the waves of pleasure that she imagined only he could give her.
Rose spread her legs, arched her hips forward and ran her fingers through the curly tangle of hair that covered her sex. She ventured into her slit with one finger only, tantalizing herself with the first tender touches for a long moment. When she felt the first tremulous tingles of pleasure she groaned.
“No…not yet. It’s too soon.”
With one hand Rose adjusted the spray so it fell in soothing bursts on her hips and, most importantly, on her pussy. She reached for the bottle of body wash, tipped it and deposited a fat, creamy drop on her palm. Working the drop into a frothy lather, she wondered how it would feel to have his slippery hands on her body.

Good news
The baking lessons are on again! My teacher is well and back in the kitchen. Yesterday we donned our aprons and baked up a storm. I have to admit, I love baking. It's so calming and the results--well, I love seeing people enjoy what I've made.
Yesterday's recipe. Yep, I'm only sharing one today. The other two? Secrets. Sorry! :)
Almond Biscotti
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons lemon zest
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 finely chopped cup toasted almonds
1 egg white
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease baking sheet.
Combine flour and baking powder; set aside.
Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the lemon zest and almond extract. Add flour mixture, then stir in the chopped almonds.
Divide dough in two. Shape each portion into a loaf about 12 inches long and 2 inches wide. Place loaves onto the cookie sheet and flatten each slightly. Beat egg white until foamy, and brush over tops of loaves.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until light brown. Cool on baking sheet for about an hour.
Lower heat in oven to 325 degrees F. Cut baked loaves diagonally into 1/2 inch thick slices. Lay slices cut side down on the baking sheet.
Bake 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

Timing to release on August 6th!
I'm so excited! Timing is scheduled to release on August 6th from Liquid Silver Books!
An blurb:
It’s said that timing is everything, but does that hold true in the bedroom, too?
Tom and Lisa are compatible in every way—or so Tom thinks. They love each other, have a great apartment and share so many mutual interests. Most people would think the couple has it all. And they do—almost. The truth is that Lisa hasn’t been feeling nearly as sexually satisfied as Tom thinks she has. He just doesn’t rock her world—in that way.
When a handsome co-worker invites Lisa to his posh beach house for the weekend, she dutifully fills him in on Tom and her unavailable status. But John is gracious enough to extend the offer to include Tom in the weekend getaway, and Lisa accepts his invitation. After all, why shouldn’t they have some fun?
Maybe a weekend of sun, sand and sex is just what the couple needs to get their urges in sync.
At least, that’s what Lisa and Tom are hoping. And John? What’s making him grin is still a mystery, but one he’s willing to share—for a price.

Coming Soon, The Mead Steed

Isn't this a great cover? I love the glimmer in her eyes, the way she looks like she's ready for some fun. And I've got to admit, I'm a sucker for a broad back and a nice, tight pair of man buns!
The Mead Steed releases on August 1st from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid. It's a fun, sexy romp that was a blast to write.
Rose is a woman in a loveless marriage, a woman who knows she deserves more than she's getting and is determined to make a better life for herself. She divorces her husband, moves to Maine, enrolls in college and almost instantly meets a man. Tom owns a small shop and the couple are attracted to each other like bees to honey. They date, and all goes well--or so Rose thinks. When Tom doesn't call, she does what any woman in her position would do. She gets annoyed. Then, she begins to see other men. But, for Rose, Tom may just be her happily-ever-after man. Now, how to make Tom see that?
An excerpt from my upcoming release, The Mead Steed:
After working the lunch crowd at the diner the only thing she yearned for was a long, hot shower.
I hope you enjoyed the small sampling of Rose's fun! And I hope you'll read The Mead Steed when it comes out. Please drop me a line here and let me know what you think. I love hearing from readers!

Garden woes
All right, the first zucchinis are hitting the kitchen. We all know how it is to have a glut of the green veggies. I have something special that I do with them, and I'm going to share it with you, right at the beginning of zucchini season.
Not-Just-Zucchini Bread
3 eggs
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups finely grated zucchini
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped almonds
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In small bowl, beat eggs, then add sugar and oil.
Melt chocolate.
Dump all ingredients into a large bowl and mix to combine. Pour batter into 2 greased loaf pans.
Bake for 75 minutes.
Cool on wire racks.
Makes 2 loaves.
Enjoy! And yes, my baking lesson was canceled again this week. That's why I'm sharing my own recipe with you. I'm hopeful that by next week my darling teacher will be fully recovered!

Fruit Loops
Sometimes I think readers get the idea writers lead exciting, action-packed lives. While I suppose some of us do, most writers lead fairly ordinary existences. They do all the regular things readers do, except they manage to squash in time for writing, too. And editing. And all the other less-than-glamorous stuff that goes with it, like agonizing over covers and dedications. Okay, you get the idea.
Just a while ago something happened here that made me smile. And I thought I'd share it with you, just so you can see for yourself how truly glamorous this writer's life is.
Of course, yesterday was July 4th. We all celebrate in our own way, and here at my house we had a large family-and-friends barbeque. And last night after the fireworks and presumably after I'd had one glass of merlot too many, I volunteered to keep my cousin's darling daughter here for the night. After all, she was already asleep on the sofa, her blond curls spread out around her sweet face halo style. How hard could it be to have one small houseguest? Besides, my cousin Jenny and her husband rarely get any time without Bonnie. Really, it seemed like a good idea-for everyone-at the time.
Now I know why Jenny ran out faster than a virgin at an orgy.
Have you ever tried to satisfy a three-year-old's breakfast cravings?
"Hey Bonnie, are you hungry?"
"Yup. But first I gotta pee."
"Of course. Uh, do you need help in the bathroom?"
One eyebrow shot up and she glared at me. "Do I look like a baby to you? No, I don't need help. I can do it myself."
The slam of the door was the perfect backdrop for the slap of the cupboard as I reached for the coffee. Heaping an extra spoonful of Folger's into the machine, I kept one ear zeroed in on the closed door. Finally, I heard the sound I'd been hoping not to hear.
"I need help..."
Ugh. Before coffee?
Bathroom duty done, and hands scrubbed, we return to the kitchen. Bonnie climbs onto a stool beside the counter and begins to kick her toes on the cabinet front at her feet. Ignoring it, I head for the fridge.
"What do you feel like having this morning, Bons?"
"Fruit Loops."
Yeah, right. Fruit Loops?
"Pancakes? How about some pancakes? With little faces on them? I think I've got some raisins around here somewhere..."
"No. Fruit Loops."
Uh oh.
"Oh, look! Croissants! Uncle Bill brought them yesterday afternoon! I've got some of that expensive blueberry jam from that shop on Main Street. I was saving it for--well, I can always get another jar. Really, it's only twelve bucks a jar...but hey, it's blue! Isn't blue your favorite color, Bons?"
"Not cwosants! Fruit Loops. I want Fruit Loops."
Forty minutes later Bonnie polished off the last of her chocolate chip, blueberry waffles drenched in pure maple syrup and accompanied by a huge glass of chocolate milk. I was, thankfully, drinking my second cup of coffee--just to fortify myself for the task of cleaning up the enormous kitchen mess. I turned to the little darling, now covered from eyebrows to knees in syrup, and asked, "Now, weren't those waffles good?"
Nodding, Bonnie said, "They were okay. But not as good as Fruit Loops."
Yeah, it's real glamorous here.

In Leiu of Baking...
A few people noticed I didn't post news of last week's baking lesson. That's because I didn't have a lesson. My wonderful teacher was feeling a bit under the weather so we called the lesson off. I missed it, but I'm hoping my teacher and friend soon feels better. Anyway, I'm sharing a recipe I use often here. But let me warn you, it's not your average cookie recipe...
Ice Cream Sandwiches
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Butter
1 Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 cup Sifted Flour
1/2 cup Chopped nuts (optional)
Cream sugar and butter. Add egg and vanilla and mix. Stir in flour, then nuts.
Drop by small rounded spoonfuls on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350F degrees for 7 minutes, or until lightly browned on the bottom. Cool on wire rack.
When cookies are cool, turn over so bottom faces up. Place a scoop of ice cream on half of cookies; press remaining cookies on ice cream, forming "sandwiches" with cookies and ice cream. Freeze before serving. Usually makes a dozen sandwiches.
Enjoy!!

Irish Eyes Excerpt
Here's a taste of Irish Eyes, my newly released Whiskey Creek Press Torrid title. Enjoy!!
Dear Lily,
Nothing could have prepared me for this place. Honestly, to say it’s beautiful is a colossal understatement. This land takes beauty to a whole new level. Not only the sights and sounds, but the people, too. But more about the people later.
When I got off the plane I expected...I don’t know what I expected, exactly—but it wasn’t what I found. Even the airport was breathtaking, surrounded by miles of open land covered in a rich, deep green grass that looks more like real carpet than the stuff that Mom had in our family room at home.
And you know how we always thought that Vermont was hilly? Mountainous, even? Well, we were clueless. This place is so endlessly rolling that I fear even a ship’s first mate could find himself seasick. I hope I get used to walking on the lumps and bumps of this new place. If not, I’ll be spraining my ankles every day. Let’s hope the sidewalks are flat, at least. Hell, I hope they have sidewalks—I haven’t seen any yet.
Riding from the airport to my temporary new home was an adventure. Irish taxi drivers are like taxi drivers the world over; they talk nonstop and spend more time pointing out the “sights” than they do paying attention to the road ahead of them. And what a road it was! Narrow and unlined except for the ruts that look like they were made by elephants, the “highway” between Dublin and here isn’t one I’ll look forward to riding again. I kid you not—my hip is bruised from being bashed against the inside of the decrepit little taxi. No exaggeration, Lily. It’s the truth.
But I did get to see some things that you just don’t see at home.
The driver—Shamus was his name, by the way—was careful to show me places to eat (Mulligan’s Pub being at the top of his list) and the chemist’s shop (they don’t call it a ‘drugstore’ over here) for finding my ‘female fixings.’ I can hear you laughing, but I promise you—that’s exactly what he said. Can you imagine? A modern man— in his thirties, probably—says ‘female fixings’? Never in New York, huh? And he did it all after he asked me out to dinner—did I mention that yet? Well, more on that little tidbit later, too.
When I inquired about the castle, the ruddy-faced, red-haired Romeo clammed right up. I pushed him a bit, claiming that I wanted to learn about all the old castles in County Meath, and asked him to tell me what he knew about the place. I wasn’t above turning on the fluttering-eyelash, hair-tossing routine, either. Sadly, neither my pointed questions nor womanly wiles had a positive effect on the now silent-as-the-tomb driver.
Muttering something beneath his breath, he made a point of showing me St. Brigid’s Church, an imposing white brick building right in the center of town. Under other circumstances, I would have loved to learn more about the building, since it’s undoubtedly an important historical monument. There’s even a hilly little graveyard with moss-covered slabs of granite behind the church. Shamus made it clear, though, that not only was he not interested in talking about the Castle, he wasn’t at all as interested in me as he’d first been. So I thought it prudent to keep my mouth shut about the church—no comments on that one. When we reached the rental cottage, a thatched fairy-tale fantasy like the ones we drew with our crayons as children, Shamus unloaded my baggage from the boot (it’s not a trunk here, no matter how much it looks like the one on my Audi). I swear I could hear him say something about banshees and ghouls as he drove away.
Oh, and no second inquiry about going out to dinner with him before he left, either. Which was really too bad, since he was temptingly handsome and, as we both know, I’m currently single. Again.
Ugh, let’s not go there.
Did you think Ireland was going to be like this? I admit that I didn’t. And I haven’t even scratched the surface of my explorations—I wonder what I’ll find when I get down to looking around. I’ll keep you posted as things here move forward.
For now, I’m off in search of a hot meal. I didn’t see anything that even comes close to resembling a Wendy’s or a Pizza Hut. I hope the food here is easier to understand than the people are!
I’m glad I came here, Lily. It’s going to be good to get some distance from the mess back at home. Maybe I can begin to figure out what I’m going to do next. After all that’s happened, I’d like to crawl into a hole and bury myself, but I know I can’t do that. I know. I know...I can hear you pressing the buttons, dialing Dr. Monroe as you read this. But don’t. You don’t need to worry about me. I’m going to be fine. I promise.
Now, I’m really going to find some food. I’ll write again soon.
Love, Maddy
P.S. As soon as I get the Internet thingy hooked up to my laptop I’ll send e-mails, too. Don’t worry, though. The snail mail will keep coming—I know how you love to examine the strange stamps, tear open the envelopes and hold the pages in your hands. I do, too. It must be one of those silly family things, don’t you think? Maybe all those letters we got at camp from Granny when we were kids—you know the ones. Anyhow, the e-mails will soon be on the way, too. Just thought I’d let you know.
* * * *
She heard a voice as she licked the envelope. It was as deep and smooth as honey on a hot biscuit and came from the other side of the old-fashioned screen door.
“We’ve been wondering when you’d get here.”
The tall, tanned stranger had eyes that sparkled like two fires behind teal sea glass. It was difficult to tear her own eyes away from his, but she knew she’d have to unless she wanted to look like the village idiot. With the sound of his voice her own expansive vocabulary seemed to have left her head entirely.
Hell’s bells! If all the men in this place look like this one, I’m never going to leave. I didn’t know real men like this existed—outside of my fantasies, anyway.
Maddy cleared her throat but that didn’t help—she still was at a loss for words. The man seemed amused by her muteness. When he grinned, she saw that his teeth were as white as the whites of his blue eyes and nearly as hypnotizing.
“My mother sent me over here to see if you need anything,” he said, holding out a tea towel-wrapped bundle. “She said to give you this. It’s one of her famous sourdough breads—she wins ribbons at the county fair for these, she does.”
Mutely, Maddy pulled the door open. He stepped inside and she saw that his shoulders were broader, his legs longer and his eyes were even more striking up close. Taking the bundle from him, she smiled and walked through the small living area and into the connected kitchen. He followed her through the house as if he had been inside it many times before, and watched as she set the bread on the worn pine table. Crossing his arms, he settled himself against the white-tiled countertop.
Her eyes fell, taking in his relaxed pose. His denim shirt tightened across his shoulders and biceps enticingly. Her fingers twitched as she fought the urge to run her hand over the solid muscle.
She realized he was waiting for her to speak.
“I...I’m Madeline Sinclair. Maddy, really. At least that’s what everyone calls me. And you are?” She was relieved to find that her voice hadn’t left her entirely. It was a bit wobbly, but at least it was intact.
He stretched out his large, calloused hand. She placed her small, delicate one inside of it and they shook briefly. Surprisingly, she felt a measure of sadness when he pulled his hand away and recrossed his arms.
“Brian O’Leary at your service. Pleased to meet you, Maddy. As I said, we’ve all been wondering when you would find your way to the cottage. Especially Mum.” He lowered his voice to a near whisper and leaned closer to her. She leaned in, too, as if it were perfectly natural to be whispering in kitchens with rugged foreigners. “She’s a bit...well I wouldn’t say nosey exactly—not if I wanted to keep my head from meeting one of her tea towels, that is. Curious might be a better word to describe me mum. She’s very curious about you, so she sent me to fetch back some information. And deliver the bread, too—of course.”
Straightening, Maddy adjusted her sweater so it lay flat against the waistband of her jeans. She wished she’d had time to change into something less rumpled than her traveling clothes.
“Please thank her for me, won’t you? The bread smells heavenly, especially after the long day I’ve had. The food on the plane was—well, you know how plane food is, I’m sure. I was just going out to hunt down something to eat.” It seemed now that she’d found her voice, she was as talkative as an overindulged parrot.
As if on cue, her stomach rumbled.
Shit, now I really look like an idiot. A hungry, babbling idiot in wrinkled clothes. Not the type of impression one hopes to make, is it?
Brian grinned. “Let’s get you fed, then. I know a place that’ll fix you up just right.” He led the way back toward the front door and she followed him through the cottage. “We’ll get to know one another better over dinner, won’t we?”
I wouldn’t mind getting to know you a whole lot better, believe me. Maybe my luck with men has finally changed. Or at the very least, maybe I’ll get a few weeks of fun on this trip. Who knows?
When they reached the front door, she scooped up Lily’s letter and the ancient-looking silver key that the realtor had left for her in the cottage’s metal mailbox. Both items had been sitting on the oak table beside the door. Brian nodded at the key.
“Won’t need that key. You could have left it in the postbox if you’d wanted to.” He winked as he took it from her and placed it on the table before he reached for the old-fashioned wrought-iron door handle. Ushering her out onto the stoop, he said, “Won’t be anyone in Blackmuir who’ll be walking in without an invite. And those that would do that—well, lassie, they can’t be kept out with locks and keys, can they?”
Irish Eyes can be purchased here.
